We have an exciting Career opportunity for an Applications Technology Manager for the Colonial Heights, VA location for our client.  This role provides the unique opportunity for leading the research and development application development efforts aligned with the overall Resins and Chemicals strategic global business plans.
 
Our client manufactures a wide variety of intermediate products, including nylon feedstock caprolactam, nylon resin, ammonium sulfate fertilizers, and specialty polymers, as well as carbon dioxide, sulfuric acid and anhydrous ammonia.
 
The Application Manager will work closely with functions supporting the various segments of Resins & Chemicals including RD&E, Commercial and Manufacturing teams for driving new product and application development and commercialization.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • The individual will drive application development initiatives for the production of polyamide resins for carpet, films, packaging, filament, engineering plastics and solvent formulations for existing products in addition to any new application spaces.
  • Responsible for the leadership, program management, budget and team development of an 8-12 member technology team based in Colonial Heights.
  • Provide strong people leadership by developing people, coaching and mentoring to address performance gaps, and addressing long term organization plans such as hiring for succession planning and staffing.
  • Responsible for applications equipment. Drive for product innovation. Transfer new technology ideas into practical experimental programs.
  • Manage the New Product Development process using Stage Gate discipline and Six Sigma tools to ensure projects are being managed to meet specifications and schedule within budgets.
  • Identify and develop application technologies critical to the business annual operating plans and long term strategic planning.
  • Leverage industry, university or third-party collaborations to identify new application technologies.
  • Works closely with polyamide chemistry leader, small molecule chemistry leader, marketing and sales leaders.
  • Works very closely with Technical Marketing organization.
  • Writes white papers and gives external presentations to customers and at industry conferences and trade shows.
  • Required to meet with customers.
  • Required to participate in industry standards committees.  
  • Leverage industry, university or third-party collaborations to identify new application technologies.
  • Responsible to coordinate any outside testing that is required.
  • Ability to review prior art and develop intellectual property.   Manage intellectual property for applications technology.
  • Work with CTO in developing technology strategy to support business goals.
  • Domestic and International travel of 20-30%
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics or Material/Polymer Science
  • 10+ years of industrial R&D experience in application development for polymers, materials and chemicals 
  • Previous experience in leading a team
  • Proven track record of building application labs and developing and implementing application capabilities
  • Proven track record of the ability to initiate, plan and execute technical projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally with technical marketing to customers 20-30% of the time
 
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • MS or PhD degree in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Material/Polymer Science preferred
  • Experience with polymer science, especially polyamide technology
  • Knowledge of solvents use in application spaces such as coatings, agriculture and dispersants/coalescers a plus
  • The ideal candidate possesses a demonstrated success in developing and commercializing new products or applications
  • Bias for action and results oriented mindset
